At the 15th edition of Design Miami/ Basel, the artist duo DRIFT presented Shy Synchrony, a site-specific installation for the fair, which seeks to encourage a deepened connection to our environment. The artists joined forces with Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto who specially conceived a pavilion, which acts as a counterpoint to the kinetic artwork.

A poetic, upside-down landscape of moving flowers perpetually blooms in mid-air, inviting visitors to pause and contemplate natural rhythms, and their soothing effect on our state of being.

"DRIFT reconnects people with nature through art. We create spaces where the viewer is tuned into rhythms resembling natural movements such as the blossoming of flowers, flocks of flying birds and sea waves."

“It will be a success if it makes people stop and change pace, before they make their way into the fair,” says Gordijn of this visual and spiritual massage. “There’s too much fast culture. Swipe, swipe, swipe. I hope it opens up space and time. It’s so important to calm down the mind.”

“It’s the project that’s taught us the most about mechanics,” says Gordijn. “At first they worked with simple motors, then we developed a circuit board and so on. It must have been redefined five or six times. But in the end it’s not about the technology, it’s about how it moves.”

“As humans, we get stuck in our existing systems and don’t know how to get out of them,” says Gordijn. “Instead of letting go of structures, we build on the old ones. Our work is about letting go and getting new perspectives. Looking at nature is hopeful.”

Superblue also presents Forest of Space, an elliptical pavilion by architect Sou Fujimoto conceived in response to DRIFT’s installation, which recreates a dynamic forest that intervenes in the space and with the movement of visitors. As audiences walk through this forest of long, vertical wooden pieces and experience the lights and organic movement of Shy Synchrony, the pavilion instills a reconnection with nature and highlights the interaction between viewers’ bodies and their surroundings. Forest of Space encourages visitors to experiment with the spatial and social elements of the structure and engage in conversations about the past, present and future of architecture, urban settlements and the natural environment.
