Disrupting Function
An OverviewPeople are trained to mindlessly evaluate design in terms of pure utility. The objects in this tour, however, confound and delight by disrupting our expectations. In so doing, the creators awaken our senses and reveal the soul of their creations.

Friction by Thomas Heatherwick
Presented by Heatherwick StudioThe design combines precision manufacturing with soulful materiality. Produced in collaboration with a team of makers using techniques developed in robotics and aerospace, as well as traditional expert handcrafting processes, it can transform from a smooth circle of 1.8 metres in diameter, able to seat eight, into an ellipse over 4 metres long.

Marrying silver, glass, stone, and steel, this mirror asks you to admire the beauty of nature more than oneself. This mirror references the Daoist understanding of harmony between the individual and the world.
