Description/
The ‘Urushi Series’ is a collection of wooden furniture and objects made by Max Lamb in collaboration with a community of lacquer craftsmen from Wajima, Japan, since 2010. The works are sculpted by the designer whilst Urushi lacquer – derived form the sap of the Urushi tree – is applied in Wajima, following traditional methods highly revered due to the time and skills required. Urushi is a collaborative process that involves the application of layers and layers of coats – with drying, sanding, and smoothing between each layer – before it reaches the final stage of polishing (known as roiro). Once it dries, Urushi lacquer is very hard, extremely durable, and resistant.
