A satisfying collection of graphic markings defines the Elements series of crystal. Each piece takes many days and multiple skilled hands to make. Entirely original and unique, the cuts and textures vary in depth and intensity creating a landscape of layered pattern.

The marks draw their energy from the island of Ireland, home to J. HILL’s Standard: sea bound and subject to regular mist. A ghostly fog blows inland from the cliffs and clings to the branches of the hardy blackthorn – its black boughs and sudden burst of creamy white blossom in April are stark and unforgettable.

Scholten + Baijings cuts reflect these natural elements, creating misty panels using sandblasting techniques and angular cuts that echo the distinctive blackthorn.

Known most for their use of colour and material – both are key to the designer’s work, here they focus instead on texture and layering. Each glass is different, allowing the user to create collections that are matching or mixed, restrained or exuberant. The glass sizes suit a multitude of uses be it whiskey, wine, champagne, water or long drinks. A tall, glass stoppered decanter completes the series.

Lead crystal glass.

Scholten + Baijings

The designers Stefan Scholten (1972) and Carole Baijings (1973) move fluidly between the disciplines of art and design, and artisanal and industrial processes, to create a visually arresting collection of work which has strong references to the past yet is overtly of the current moment. The design duo established Scholten & Baijings, Studio for Design, in 2000. They continue to combine minimal forms and balanced use of colour with traditional craft techniques and industrial production in a distinctive, almost un-Dutch design style. The finesse, entrancing colours and subtle use of materials in their work have earned them considerable admiration in the international design world. Their work, both independent and commissioned, is collected and exhibited worldwide. After a successful collaboration of 19 years designers Carole Baijings and Stefan Scholten have decided to explore new artistic challenges individually. Both will work under their own moniker. The existing portfolio of Studio Scholten & Baijings will be supervised by Studio Stefan Scholten.
