Description/

Swarm is a vase featuring an irregular surface formed by magnetic force. Composed of aggregates of a singular material, their organic form is generated by thousands of short steel rods attracted by magnetism to a base structure. With a diameter of 1.2 mm and a length of 15 mm, the steel rods’ unpredictable orientation, density and layering is completely powered by magnetic force and dependent on the behavior of the user. Human interactions such as sitting or touching also contribute to the unique and complex shape, impossible to replicate due to its variables. Rather than simply designing a shape, we+ utilize magnetic force to design a process to create an original form. By designing the process that creates the form, not the form itself, and accepting the uncertainty of natural phenomena, we+ aim to generate new methods of productions and expressions that do not resist the power of nature, but rather aim to recontextualize and integrate it.

we+ is a contemporary design studio established in 2013 by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando. They give form to new perspectives and values through unique production methods and means of expression, developed on the basis of extensive research and experimentation. Their self-initiated works are represented by Spazio Rossana Orlandi in Milan and Galerie Philia in New York. In addition to exhibiting their works internationally, they undertake commissioned projects for companies and other organisations, including installation, branding, product development, and graphic design. Utilizing the strengths of each member based on their diverse backgrounds and the knowledge gained from daily research, the studio continues to grow and diversify.
