Spun began as an exploration of metal spinning: a manufacturing technique most commonly used for making lampshades or timpani drums.
When exploring the spinning process, the studio team wondered whether it would be possible to create a comfortable, functional object to sit on from a rotationally symmetrical form.
To understand the geometry and the ergonomics, the studio experimented with making full-size models which was gradually tweaked and refined to the optimum shape. When the first full-size prototype was spun in aluminium it was not only comfortable but surprisingly enjoyable to sit on, with its capacity to rotate and rock in three dimensions.
The studio produced a limited series of highly finished metal chairs with master spinners in Italy and finished by specialist craftsmen in the UK.
Each Spun chair is comprised of six metal spinnings which are welded together. Once formed, the surface is treated with a finish: mirror-polished, copper polished or oxidised steel. For the final stage, soft, UK-sourced leather is hand-fitted to the peripheral edge and base. The Spun chair is an edition of 35, each of which are signed and numbered by Thomas Heatherwick.
