Description/
“The central premise of Jie Wu’s creative practice is to elevate the common perception of synthetic materials and their potential. As the artist continues to develop her creative practice, she hopes that her approach to resin making can be considered with a similar appreciation to how we view more traditional long-lasting organic materials. ‘Arguably – the artist says – a material can be considered sustainable if it is valued and useful for decades to come’.
Spring Equinox is made by combining sections of reclaimed Chinese rosewood with pigmented epoxy resin. The wood used is very special and rare; sourced from a remote village in China it has a prolonged growth cycle. The locals use it for fast-moving consumer goods and wood burning. The complex textures and marble-like patterns are achieved using different types of pigments. All Jie’s works start with the hand making of layers of the material that is then cut and finally hand polished. ‘Nowadays, hand polishing is rarely an option – says the artist – but I believe that the result is more delicate and warm’.
Jie Wu’s work embodies a strong vitality, which results from the encounter between organic and man-made materials.”
