Description/
The Shakers believed in gender equality, and Sisters held equal power to Brethren in all administrative and spiritual matters. Even though everyday chores were split along traditionally gendered lines, domestic tasks were regarded equally important when it came to maintaining a productive and harmonious community. This is reflected in the tools created for Sisters’ work—illustrated here by the fine craftsmanship and elegant design of the Shaker Spool Holder. ¶ Lathe-turned center handle with 24 individually lathe-turned, yellow painted spindles. Fitted with 24 hand-turned spools of maple and various fruitwoods, all made by the Shakers with original painted, stained, or varnished surfaces.
Birch.
