Sconce with double counterweight

R. Mathieu edition – circa 1955
Black and yellow lacquered metal and polished brass

Good original condition, few marks of use on the original lacquer. Black reflector re-lacquered on the original model.

This sconce is made up of an articulated structure in black lacquered metal on which are fixed two lighting fixtures, one single in the shape of a shell the other is double in the shape of a diabolo. This luminaire is articulated so that each of the two lighting systems can be positioned at any point in the space. For this Robert Mathieu has developed a unique double balance system where one arm is the counterweight of the other. The whole is articulated with great precision and is balanced like a Calder mobile.

Only one other light fixture with a double balance system was known until now with the G23 floor lamp by Pierre Guariche. Mathieu created one in 1954 with this sconce and another with the 1958 ceiling lamp. This piece is the only known double-balance sconce in the world, and there are only three examples listed today.
