This hanging cabinet (signed PE 1967) was acquired from a New York collector, along with a corresponding console, and represents the finest condition and preservation possible. Both pristine museum-quality works were initially purchased from the Directional showroom on Third Avenue before Directional had made them publicly available.

In 1968 Directional debuted their first line of Argente pieces based on preset designs (like these cabinets), which differed from the bespoke Paul Evans Studio pieces that were commissioned through a collaborative process with the client.

With both his Studio works and Directional line, Evans sustained complete creative and quality control by personally overseeing his loyal production team and refusing to outsource labor.

Paul Evans

Paul Evans (1931-1987) was an iconic American furniture designer, sculptor, and artist who is famous for his contributions to the American Craft Movement of the 1970s and for his work with the influential American manufacturer Directional Furniture. Paul Evans’ Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings distinguish him from others in the world of design. Performer Lenny Kravitz, a collector of Evans pieces, describes his distinctive work as “stunningly beautiful, stunningly ugly, stunningly tacky, [and] stunningly sophisticated.”
