Paul Evans Argente Skyline Low Table

Description/

A popular form that Paul Evans would revisit through his career is a composition he called Skyline. Skyline pieces, such as this unique, playful low table, were comprised of individually hand-welded boxes of varying heights, shapes, textures and designs, bonded together as a solid base. While this arrangement was used extensively in his welded steel, Sculpted Bronze, and eventually Cityscape works, there is no other record of Skyline works in the Argente series apart from this dining table and a corresponding dining table commissioned by a Virgina collector. The low table is made up of 22 boxes, each with hand-applied texture and pattern. Perhaps one of the most expressive of Evans’ forms, the Skyline tables are reliably popular for their whimsical composition and utility.

Paul Evans (1931-1987) was an iconic American furniture designer, sculptor, and artist who is famous for his contributions to the American Craft Movement of the 1970s and for his work with the influential American manufacturer Directional Furniture. Paul Evans’ Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings distinguish him from others in the world of design.

Performer Lenny Kravitz, a collector of Evans pieces, describes his distinctive work as “stunningly beautiful, stunningly ugly, stunningly tacky, [and] stunningly sophisticated.”
