Shinya Yamamura’s deftly sculpted lacquer caddy is delicately ornamented with mother-of-pearl inlays that dance illustriously across the smooth rounded body of the keyaki elm. Yamamura’s hand is the key to the intricate design and structure; with careful attention, Yamamura designs the cut abalone shells into circular patterns and grafts them onto the lacquer box. Layer by layer Yamamura vigorously polishes the surface, at last joining the two materials on a single plane.
