Description/

Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, cabinet ‘Flora’ model 852, mahogany, oak, hand-colored paper, Sweden, designed circa 1937/38, manufactured 1940s.

This cabinet follows the line of Frank’s idea to design the surfaces of cabinets in a different, uncommon way. In the early 1930s Frank began to cover cubic cabinets in (colorful) fabric. He embraced colors and patterns when others cut back on ornaments and decorative elements. The inspiration for this cabinet derived from a visit to the summer house ‘Hammarby’ of botanist Carl Linnaeus close to Uppsala. In this house the walls of the bedroom are decorated with hand-colored floral papers. After Frank’s return to Stockholm in 1946 he once again collaborated with Svenskt Tenn and assisted Estrid Ericson but then not to contribute to the range of furniture but to be more involved with projects and exhibition. In 1951, Frank was part of an exhibition of Svenskt Tenn in the United States, at the Kaufman’s department store in Pittsburgh. The venue was owned by Edgar Kaufmann and his family, who were the clients for Frank Lloyed Wright’s Fallingwater house and the desert house designed by Neutra. So, the department store frequently exhibited the newest designs. In five large showrooms full rooms were displayed and introduced Swedish modernism to the US. Josef Frank’s cabinet model 852 was shown in the bedroom.

Josef Frank (1885-1967), architect, theorist and designer and one of Europe’s leading modernists in the 1920s, was born in Austria and emigrated to Sweden in 1933, where he lived the rest of this life. Frank studied at the University of Technology in Vienna and taught at Vienna School of Arts and Crafts until 1925. He was one of the initiators of Vienna Werkbund. In Sweden, Frank worked for Svenskt Tenn as a head designer for textiles, wallpaper and furniture.
