Description/
Chuma Maweni’s distinctive hand-thrown ceramics are a contemporary evolution of traditional Nguni pottery. His Imbizo (“gathering” in Xhosa) collection of clay furniture was originally made in 2018. Each piece has been handcrafted, including the surface of the table, which Maweni has carved his intricate patterns into. Each stool is completely unique in shape, colour and patterning, with their striking silhouettes being adorned with precisely ridged bands, hand-carved textures and geometric incisions. Traditionally, an imbizo is a forum or meeting called by a traditional Xhosa or Zulu leader. Maweni’s installation (comprising his Imbizo table and several Imbizo stools) is a modern-day version; a place for people to get together and share a meal or drink.
