Description/
A master of hand-thrown ceramics, Chuma Maweni’s distinctive approach combines contemporary hand-coiled shapes marked with precisely patterned incisions. His blackened ceramic works are pit-fired with the same techniques used by Nguni tribes before him, their dark, porous surfaces, striking silhouettes and smoky scent established him as a distinctly contemporary ceramicist dedicated to his craft.
The shape of this work, with its flattened top, makes reference to a drum, ‘iGubu’ in isiZulu. Because of its material, when struck the work would make a melodic drum. Maweni also has an upbringing in a musical family of singers, and so he often references instruments as ubiquitous forms.
