Colored with powder mixed into urushi lacquer, the perfectly equal gold and black components of Jihei Murase’s tea caddy are sculpted on the turning lathe and shaved by hand. Murase’s nakatsugi caddy elegantly combines the grain of the Japanese elm with carved decoration made from hand-forged wrought iron tools.
