The 'Fungo' table lamp was designed by Gabriella Crespi (1922 – 2017) as part of the 'Rising Sun' series circa 1974. On a polished brass stem that has a wide base and gets thinner towards the top a round lamp shade is adjusted. The shade consists out of single bamboo parts that form an appearance of great colors together. The natural material combines perfectly with the brass them and details. The artist’ name has Gabriella Crespi been cast in the brass of the foot and on top of the shade. Gabriella Crespi was born into an aristocratic, Italian family in 1922. Her career took off at the end of the 1950s when she presented her first collection. Throughout the 1960s, she shifted her attention towards a more industrial style and was working intensely with Dior. However, most of her well-known work was created in the 1970s. During this era, many designers rediscovered an appreciation for artworks created during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period. It was within this glamorous, decadent milieu that Crespi left her mark. The designer created interiors for clients that included the Princess of Monaco, the Shah of Iran, the King of Saudi Arabia and other rich figures in Europe. Because she had such a wealthy clientele, she was able to use rare and expensive materials. Therefore, Crespi often opted for a combination of exotic materials (such as bamboo, wood, and rattan) and rigor materials (like polished brass) to create furniture that is “full of life”. For her, the juxtaposition of these materials “unites strength and flexibility.” The extraordinary mixture of materials is also visible in the ‘Fungo’ table lamp. From 1985 onwards, Crespi abandoned her design practice and pursued a spiritual lifestyle. The next two decades of her life she would spend living in a Himalayan retreat. The designer eventually died in 2017 in Milan. Provenance: Private Collection, Italy Literature: Pierluigi Masini, Gabriella Crespi, Spirito e Materia.
