The urushi lacquer that is characteristic of Jihei Murase’s works is hardly visible. The clear lacquer reveals the natural beauty of the Japanese elm, polished and protected by the varnishing process. In leaving the splendid natural quality of the wood, Murase exposes the subtle variations in hues and textures inherent in the old-growth elm. The unique shape and ridged texture is inspired by Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”
