Yang Zhenzhong
Exposure F
Description/
Yang zhenzhong uses 3D carving techniques and manual techniques to carve chains from different stones and make them “visible” from the stone itself. Chains are a consistent element of the “Exposure” series. These chains are cut directly from the stone and polished, interlocking with each other, and the two ends disappear into the original stone. This batch of works is the result of Yang’s first exploration and practice in the field of sculpture, it is also the artist’s gaze and discussion of “labor” again.
The stone is carved into a shape that is entangled and linked by chains, just like the stone guardrail connected by iron chains in China’s mountainous scenic areas. The difference is that the chains on Yang’s stone sculptures are not added at a later stage, but cut and polished as a whole from the stone. While making full use of the latest technology, the artist actively refused to allow his work to be completed automatically and programmatically: He consciously interrupted the workflow, combined with the traditional skills of ancient Chinese craftsmen, and constantly turned the stone carving into the object of his artist’s creation, not just the object of the robotic system.
