Evan D’Orazio (b 1983) is a contemporary visual artist from Illinois. Drawn to an art-making career from 2006 and primarily working in clay. He views the ceramic object as not merely about formal considerations, but his lived experience in the world. His forms and glazes carry with them an investigation of his own place and identity; the form as body, the surface as skin. He considers this material not just from a formal point of view, but as an investigation of his own place and identity. For D’Orazio the ceramic process, especially the technique of throwing clay, is a meditative and healing act. He has begun to hone into the visual qualities of things related closer to his own identity in an attempt to incorporate their surfaces into the process and to evoke an appetite out of the unappetising material that is fired clay.
