Angelo Mangiarotti ‘Eros’ Coffee Table in Marble
H 40.5 x W 100 x D 62.5 CM.
With the conical support and the vast marble oval at the top, Angelo Mangiarotti’s Eros Coffee Table recalls a classical past of the design history. By finding the optimal solution in the gravity interlocking between the top and the legs, Mangiarotti was able to turn a heavy and hard material like marble into a product with extraordinary formal softness. Highly esteemed for his researchedandcontrolledapproachtomaterials,Italianarchitect, sculptor, anddesignerAngelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan in 1921. Having graduated from the Politecnico di Milano with an architecture degree in 1948, he moved to the United States in 1953. There, he held a visiting professorship at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology and befriended famous architects Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Walter Gropius (1883-1969), Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886- 1969), and Konrad Wachsmann (1901-1980)—all of whom influenced his work immensely.
