Description/
Divider Screen – Brecht Wright Gander’s series of works rendered from curly maple inlaid with abalone shell, stone, metals, acrylics, and other woods in biomorphic forms appear as if by divination. He favors shapes that can be slightly off-putting: a divider screen that confronts a viewer like a steroidal, escaped Joan Miró glyph. Its portal-like shape suggests the marking of a threshold, troubling the boundary between this earthly world and the unknowable next. Much of the inlay forms in the Divider Screen are adapted from the Celestial Alphabet, a vowelless typography invented by a German heretic in the 16th century to communicate with angels and so illegible nothing was ever written with it. Gander’s use of an unusable occult language transforms his pieces into portals for unknowable rituals—inscrutability-as-ornament. In their veiled mysticism, their capacity for infinite meanings becomes irresistible.
