Gerrit Rietveld

Crate desk

Rietveld’s Crate series, originally designed for mass production for the department store Metz & Co., had a lasting impact on generations of makers, most famously Donald Judd’s furniture in the 1980’s. The present desk is a rare early example and bears a strong resemblance to Rietveld’s drawing of the model in the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Rotterdam. Later versions have a central drawer and a plank footboard. Examples of the later version are in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Vitra Design Museum; and in Donald Judd’s collection at Marfa, Texas.

Stained pine.
