Description/
Over the past 20 years Malian designer Cheick Diallo has become a major figure on the continent and is often cited as the first person to develop conceptual design in an African context. His furniture designs have their point of origin in the long-established, day-to-day trades of West African cities, especially Bamako. These trades encompass silver forgery, tannery, weaving, textile dyeing and scrap metal processing. The Coumba and Lafia chairs are wrapped in large continuous sections of tie-dyed leather in such a way that the round dark marks echo the apertures of the chairs. Diallo brings a contemporary outlook to long-standing craft forms, applying them in new and juxtaposed ways to create highly original designs.
