Description/

Ascend, is a glass work of an incredible technicality. It is mouth-blown, sculpted, mirrored and then sculpted and polished again. The result of this work questions the material itself.
With this fully mirrored golden color, Ascend looks like a molten drop. The artist Nadège Desgenétez is one with her material. For her, glassblowing requires an engagement in the present, an acute awareness of the limits and capacities of the body and the specific needs of molten glass.
Her works question the relationship to the body, that of the artist through her physical and mental commitment – the work resulting from breath, movement, touch – but also that of the viewer with all the reflexive play that results from the mirroring of the piece. Indeed, the artist seeks to express the presence of the body and its interrelation with the place by exploiting the way the material interacts with light, color and space through form, surface and reflection.

Materials: Glass, blown and sculpted glass form, mirrored, carved and polished.

Nadège Desgenétez

designer

"Originally from France, Desgenétez has worked, taught and exhibited in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including the “Prix d’Honneur de la Fondation de France” (Paris, France), the Saxe Award from Pilchuck Glass School in 1997 and 2004 (Stanwood, USA), the “Prix de la Vocation” from the Fondation Marcel Bleustein Blanchet (Paris, France), grants from Arts ACT and the Australia Council for the Arts, and residencies from Northlands Creative Glass (Lybster, UK), Pittsburgh Glass Center (Pittsburgh, USA) and the Tacoma Museum of Glass (Tacoma, USA). She has been teaching at the Glass Workshop of the Australian National University in Canberra since 2005. Nadège Desgenétez’s work investigates ideas of connection to place. It is informed by her experience as a migrant and a maker, and mines references to the body, familiar landscapes and the process of glass blowing. In her recent solo exhibition this body here Desgenétez seeks to express the body’s presence and its interrelation with place by harnessing the ways the material interacts with light, colour and space through form, surface and reflection."
