Description/
Alain Douillard’s earliest works were for churches where he refurbished religious sculptures which deeply influenced his sculptural forms later on. In 1964, his work began to take on a more abstract and geometric aesthetic by utilizing car parts and scrap metal, which became the main material in his work throughout his career. Douillard, like many other artists at the time, also created jewelry as personal pieces for his family and friends, using the same abstract sculptural language used in his larger sculptures into a smaller form.

Alain Douillard received his training in sculpture at the Beaux-arts de Nantes. From 1952 to 1964, his work became more abstract and geometric. He began collecting car parts and rusty pieces of scrap metal that he cut, bound, and assembled together to create his totem like sculptures. During this period he founded the group LOVE with fellow sculptors. In 1978, Douillard created his forms using one central piece and building around this fixed element which allowed him to bring movement and dimensions to his sculptures. Douillard created many monumental public sculptures throughout France.
