Satyendra Pakhalé

Designer

Pakhalé trained in India and Switzerland and is active in the fields of design, art, and architecture. His design work goes beyond binaries like high-tech and low-tech, industrial production and traditional crafts, functionality and poetic significance. Pakhalé has lectured worldwide and was invited to head the Master of Design for Humanity & Sustainable Living at Design Academy Eindhoven from 2006 to 2010. His work can be found in the permanent collections of prestigious museums throughout the world, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Centre Pompidou.

Satyendra Pakhalés 'Bell Metal Objects (BM)' series (2018) is one of the first series through which the artist seeks to explore the sensorial quality of objects. Mass production restricts the tactile nature of design, stirring away from the senses of hand craftsmanship, impacting the cultural and symbolic meaning of objects. By returning to working with traditional materials and techniques, Pakhalé aims to evolve the absent quality of modern technological objects. The collection of 'BM' Objects was produced through a technique practised worldwide for centuries, known as the lost-wax bell-metal casting process. Working with the Muria community in Central India, Pakhalé rediscovered this age-old craft. Refining the process, he skillfully combines design and ancient craft to produce a collection of contemporary design objects.
Materials: bright bronze with sandblasted surface.
