R 20th Century features an international selection of rare and unique designs from the past century. Evan Snyderman and Zesty Meyers founded R. in 1996 in Brooklyn, NY. In May 2000, they expanded to their current Tribeca location, opening with an exhibition of modern Dutch designer Cees Braakman.
Five years of acclaimed exhibitions ensued, including Greta Grossman, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Verner Panton, Wendell Castle, and Sergio Rodrigues. In December 2004, R opened a major Poul Kjaerholm retrospective running concurrently in their gallery and the Sean Kelly Gallery, an unprecedented bridging of the art and design communities. Following that exhibition, R. hosted their first showing of contemporary design, Bassam Fellows: Craftsman Modern.
