Belgian designer Maarten De Ceulaer is best known for his boisterous furniture and objects, mixing repetitions of familiar shapes with charming colors, textures and a reconsideration of process most typical to Design Academy Eindhoven graduates.
His most striking works include the Pile of Suitcases bureaus, first editioned by Nilufar Gallery in Milan, his balloon-molded ceramic Ball0on Bowls seen at Victor Hunt, and the Kusama-esque flocked Mutation Series, launched at Galleria Rossana Orlandi during Salone del Mobile 2012. De Ceulaer is an imaginative thinker and hands-on maker, tirelessly experimenting with materials and unexpected forms to reinterpret traditional products.
His upcoming projects include Squat #1, for which Balice Hertling, Nilufar and Du Dimore Studio have invited De Ceulaer to occupy a 350sm apartment at 186 avenue Victor Hugo to host a temporary studio and think-tank for the month of October. And a Design Miami/ 2012 commission for Fendi that celebrates the fashion-house’s iconic Pequin pattern developed by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1970s.
