Aaron Betsky Interviews Alessandro Mendini
Time: June 4, 6-7pm
Location: Markthalle Media Lounge

The Design Talks planned for Design Miami/ Basel 08 will present focused interviews with two eminent creative masters, Joep van Lieshout and Alessandro Mendini, both of whom have dramatically expanded the limits of art and design through visually striking, concept-based work. Although very different, Mr. Mendini and Mr. Lieshout share a strong interest in the philosophical ideas underlying creative output, and both have . Neither fear defying the mainstream in their efforts to render objects full of poetry and social commentary. We are proud to have Aaron Betsky, Director of the Cincinnati Art Museum and Curator of the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale, facilitate these intimate and insightful conversations.

MENDINI
Alessandro Mendini has been transforming the discourse around design since his early career, when he helped formulate the Radical Design movement in Italy in the late 70s and early 80s. His ongoing investigations into the symbolic/communicative power of non-industrial, art-like design work have definitively opened the door to today’s proliferation of limited-edition design. Mr. Mendini has never surrendered his experimental perspective, and his work, new and old, remains among the most sought-after collectibles on the design market.

VAN LIESHOUT
Joep van Lieshout, founder of the collective enterprise Atelier van Lieshout, has positioned his studio’s work within the arena of art; however, the objects and installations he creates defy easy categorization. Through a wide variety of projects ranging from functional mobile-living units to surrealistic kiosks and furniture, Mr. Van Lieshout critiques contemporary society’s focus on commercial concerns and invites his viewers to rethink their relationship with the objects that fill our environment. The interdisciplinary nature of his work has made an impact in the diverse fields of contemporary art as much as architecture and design.

BETSKY

Mr. Betsky’s new book, What is Modernism?, a survey of Modernism in architecture and design, will come out next year.
