Basel is Switzerland's third-largest city. It is also a highly cosmopolitan city: not just as the centre of an agglomeration of 700'000 people living in three countries (Switzerland, Germany, France), but also as home to citizens of some 150 nations. Moreover, Basel is characterized by a very high density of internationally-active corporations; these spread Basel's name throughout the world - and simultaneously ensure that the city regularly hosts gatherings of people from all corners of the globe.
Cultural, educational, and economic metropolis
Basel projects, well beyond central Europe, the image of a progressive, environmentally conscious, international, and integrative cultural, educational, and economic metropolis. It successfully combines such small-town features as clarity and intimacy with the advantages of a city: expansiveness, wide choice, and diversity.
 |
Despite its social dynamism and innovative economic strength, Basel is a lively border town, with a strong traditional base rooted in history which can be experienced not only at its carnival, the Basler Fasnacht. Both its historic townscape and modern architecture are part of Basel's living present.
Basel is proud of its cultural offering. In proportion to its size, no other European town offers so many museums: it can count more than 30 in an area of only 37 square kilometres.
This international art show, taking place from June 4-8, 2008, features about 300 leading art galleries from 30 countries on all continents. Art Basel is the world's premier modern and contemporary art fair. 20th- and 21st-century art works by over 2000 artists will be on display.
 |
55,000 art collectors, art dealers, artists, art curators and art lovers attend the annual meeting place of the art community. 1800 media representatives report on Art Basel. The New York Times has called Art Basel the "Olympics of the Art World". According to the Paris daily Le Monde, Art Basel is "la meilleure foire du monde", and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes the international art show as "Die beste Kunst ist gerade gut genug."
During Art Basel, the cultural city of Basel becomes a world mecca of art. A fascinating atmosphere is generated; reinforced with exhibitions and events hosted all over town. World class museums, outdoor sculptures, theaters, concert halls, idyllic medieval old town and interesting new buildings by leading architects, art has always been part of Basel life.
